MLB Player Announces Divorce After Wife of 22 Years Undergoes Brain Surgery

St. Louis Cardinals player Albert Pujols is divorcing his wife of 22 years Deidre Pujols — mere days after she underwent brain surgery.

In a statement released by his agent Dan Lozano on Monday, the MLB athlete announced the split while acknowledging that “this is not the most opportune time.”

“Sadly, after 22 years of marriage, I have made the decision to file for divorce from my wife, Deidre,” Albert wrote.

“I realize this is not the most opportune time with Opening Day approaching and other family events that have recently taken place,” he added. “These situations are never easy and isn’t something that just happened overnight.”

Noting that he has prayed “for many long days and nights” about his decision, Albert continued, “As a devout Christian, this is an outcome that I never wanted to see happen.”

“I am thankful for the five beautiful children that we brought into this world and remain committed to raising them in a loving and safe environment,” Albert concluded. “I ask that you please respect our privacy and the privacy of our five children during this time.”

Last week, Deidre announced that she was undergoing a procedure to remove a brain tumor that was discovered in October.

“I have delayed this procedure for as long as I could out of fear and inconvenience to my busy life,” she wrote. “However, I can wait no longer and with the support of people I love and who care about me, I am encouraged to take care of this before it takes my life.”

On Sunday while posting a scan of her brain, Deidre appeared to confirm that her surgery was successful.

“Whether God healed me supernaturally or a doctor had to go in and get out this creepy invader, it is a miracle! The fact that they can open my head and get out the bad stuff and put it all back together blows my mind,” she wrote.

Deidre also expressed gratitude to the medical staff “who saved my life and cared for me after such a major surgery.”
