Georgia Dad Seeks Justice After Son’s Body Was Lost in Mail 3 Years Ago

A Georgia father is seeking answers after his son’s remains were somehow lost in the mail three years ago and never recovered.

As reported by outlets including People and WSBTV, in 2019, Jeffrey Merriweather Jr. died after a suspected shooting and his body was discovered partially decomposed weeks later.

However, when Merriweather Jr.’s remains were shipped from the Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office to a specialized facility to determine a cause of death, the remains were inexplicably lost in the mail.

Three years later, Merriweather Jr.’s family is looking into legal action to determine which party or parties are responsible.

“I just want someone to be held liable for this,” Merriweather Jr.’s father Jeffrey Merriweather Sr. told People on Thursday. “I have his two kids too, and there’s no closure for us. I just don’t understand how certain laws protect people from things like this.”

“This has been for us like something out of a horror movie,” Merriweather Sr. added to WSBTV. “Then to now, you lose his remains. This is… naw, man.”

WSBTV says a FedEx spokesperson said the shipment arrived at its Austell location but could not be traced beyond that.

“I don’t know how this could have happened when you got to sign for stuff. You got tracking numbers,” Merriweather Sr. said to WSBTV.

In a statement to People, a FedEx spokesperson told the outlet, “Our thoughts and concerns remain with the family of Mr. Merriweather, however, we request that further questions be directed to the Fulton County Medical Examiner’s office.”

Though the Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office didn’t respond to People for comment, the office told WSBTV that they have been reaching out to their investigative team to see who could explain what happened in this case.

Overall, the Merriweather family told WSBTV that they want legislation enacted where civil penalties would be imposed on those who lose human remains.

“This is a lot of negligence on the part of FedEx, who had the remains at their location, and then all of a sudden, lose it?” Merriweather Sr. added to People. “How do you do that with remains? This is like the worst nightmare a person can go through.”
