There is no limit to what you can achieve with a little hard work and dedication! Jackson State University has had a lot of eyes on them since NFL legend Deion Sanders became the coach of the Tigers football team in September 2020. However, football isn’t the only sport that JSU is excelling in, and you can thank basketball player Ameshya Williams-Holliday for that!

According to CNN, Ameshya has become the first HBCU player to be drafted into the WNBA in 20 years! WNBA team Indiana Fever selected the college senior in the third round Monday night, where she was picked 25th overall. Realizing her historic achievement, Ameshya told CNN:

“It’s an honor, a dream come true, and a blessing to be able to be a part of history and to be able to open doors for our HBCU community. Being a trailblazer feels amazing, but there is so much more to accomplish.”

The 24-year-old, 6-foot-4 athlete added,

“I’m very grateful for this opportunity to continue my career on the next level and, most importantly, to continue to be a great example for my son Jace and my younger siblings and the kids in my community. I want every HBCU athlete to never lose hope and to know anything is possible.”

Ameshya has worked hard to receive such high recognition. Reports show she is a three-time Southwestern Atlantic Conference (SWAC) defensive player of the year and the 2021-22 season’s player of the year.

Coach Prime also shared words of encouragement to the future WNBA baller. In a video captured by Thee Pregame Show, he said,

“Ameshya, we’re always so darn proud of you. We appreciate you. You are the beginning, and that’s what history should be, ladies first.”

Ending the video, Coach Prime thanked the baller for being the genesis of what’s transpiring at Jackson State. Currently, only five HBCU players have ever been drafted into the WNBA!

Congrats Ameshya!
